Other Random Happenings...

Let's see... what else is happening around this house these days...

On Wednesday, Nolan's middle school spent the day finishing up their projects for "Boys in the Boat".  This was a school wide project where the 7th and 8th graders read the book and then worked through various project that helped reinforce what they had read and learned from the book.  One of those projects was building a boat out of cardboard by working in groups that the teachers assigned.  Nolan was put into a pretty unruly group so the teacher took their box cutters and other supplies away numerous times, only giving them back to Nolan because she said that she could trust him.  We were glad that she knew that he wasn't involved in the disturbances that his group caused, but it also meant that much of the work was given to him simply because he did what he was suppose to do, and that discouraged him.  Despite the discouragement and many doubts about how the boat would hold up, Nolan's group did manage to keep their boat afloat and he said that it ended up being a bit more fun than he had expected.

Here is a picture of their boat the had the theme "Americana"...

... and then a couple of pictures of the boats in action at the pool.

We were able to head over to the Performing Arts Center on Thursday night for Nolan's his final orchestra concert of the 7th grade.  Noel was at the boys sectional championship so he couldn't attend, but the rest of us were all able to drive over and to listen to Nolan play.

I am saving the videos of the middle school performance here for future reference.

Nolan also received an award for excellence for the 7th grade orchestra.

Nolan had two hours on Friday (the last day of school) where they were able to go outside.  He said that the fire department came over with their water hoses and at first they were just spraying them up into the air so that the kids could run through the mist, but then they just started spraying the kids down.  We got a phone call from one of Nolan's teachers just letting us know that he may need a change of clothes - or at least a towel - for his ride home.  LOL

Two funny stories about Nolan that made us laugh in recent days... The first is when he thought it would be a good idea to eat a cherry ring pop candy that he found in one of our kitchen cupboards.  Apparently it tasted all right, but the coloring was a little thick...and it just stuck to his lips for a really really long time.  He couldn't get it to come off, no matter how hard he wiped at it.  We all got a good laugh out of that.

And then during the last two weeks of school, he apparently lost his official ID badge for school.  He didn't want to go to the office to get a new one because he would have to pay $5 so he just decided to make one himself and then see if anyone noticed.  Either the teachers had given up caring about the ID's during the last days of school, or they didn't really get a good look at it, but either case... Nolan managed to check into school every day for the last two weeks with this homemade ID lanyard.  At least he added a bar code in case he needed to scan it for school lunch.  (He brings his lunch every day so that helped him get away with the ruse a little longer than normal).

The boys had their track sectionals on Thursday night of last week and three of Noel's hurdlers advanced to regionals.  With the two girls also advancing, 5 or the 6 varsity hurdlers from Noel's group advanced and that's really exciting for him!

With her surgery last Monday, Marissa had a lot more down time last week.  'Probably the longest downtime that she's ever had in her life.  She was really trying not to go stir crazy so she ordered a building set that she could work on.  It only took her 24 hours from start to finish, but it turned out really cute.  This particular kit comes with two or three other buildings in its series, so I'm sure that she will add to it at some point.

Morgan has also had some down time since she came home from college.  She has been working on her two online college classes in the evenings, but she has still had more time during the day, so she recently started working on one of her Christmas gifts from Noel.  It's a little wooden kit that will sit on her bookshelf and add a sweet touch to all of her personal books.  She needed help from Noel a couple of times, but for the most part, she was able to complete it all by herself.

Morgan will leave for Grundy, VA next Monday and will stay there through the middle of July.  We will certainly miss her while she's gone but we are excited for her experiences there as she will be working as a "dorm mom" at the Mission School.
